What does “wa” mean? Is it “am”? Because I know that “watashi wa
Particle はwa works to highlight certain element in a sentence, usually word in front of it, such as: 私はXXです。 Watashi wa XX desu. ここにリンゴがあります。Koko ni ringo ga arimasu. ↓ ここにはリンゴがあります。Koko ni wa ringo ga arimasu. はwa works to give emphasis on the word to attract listener's attention so that listener will give attention to the word as it is the theme or important point for speech of the speaker. When speaker mentions the theme, normally explanation/contents/attributes and such things will follow to complete the speech. Therefore, when you say "Watashi wa gina93x desu.", you are talking about watashi and you explain with something as attribute for watashi (in this case a name). Watashi wa se ga takai desu. watashi wa gakusei desu. watashi wa ureshii desu. はwa is so-called copula and because there is no word that corresponds to meaning/function/effect of this particle in English, you cannot find any translated word in Japanese-English dictionary. In some cases, it resembles function of "am" but in other cases you cannot take it in the same way. Watashi wa kaeri masu. Watashi wa kinō yasumi mashita. You cannot bring "am/are/was/were" into these sentences. You will have to change your concepts which you are accustomed in English thinking. |Yes. "wa" means "am".
